2002: This chapter was reproduced on the Canela/Department of Anthropology/Smithsonian website with the permission of Kenneth M. Kensinger. I have not changed the facts presented in this 1984-published article, but have altered many sentences and paragraphs with the help of Jean Crocker to enhance the comprehension of the reader. Data were updated where indicated. I collected materials for this article between 1970 and 1979.
